But Agent Carrie Mathison (Danes) isn't so sure; in fact, she's convinced that Brody was "turned" by the notorious, bin Laden-like terrorist leader Abu Nazir, and is now part of an ambitious scheme to kill Americans on their own soil. The fact that she has no proof and precious little support within the CIA--only mentor Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) and a couple of others give the slightest credence to her theory--hardly deters Mathison. She's persistent, to say the least. But she's also obsessive, unstable (bipolar, to be precise), and reckless, all too willing to do things illegally and prone to making choices throughout the season that put herself and those around her in serious jeopardy, both physically and psychologically. Brody, meanwhile, has a tough time readjusting to normal life, what with the obnoxious glare of the media spotlight and the awkwardness of the reunion with his family, including wife Jessica (Morena Baccarin, very different from her role as the icy alien leader in V) and their two kids.

So what is Brody's real agenda, if he even has one? There are plenty of indications early on that Mathison's suspicions about him are correct. But are his visions memories, or simply hallucinations? Does even the fact that Brody kneels on a prayer rug in his garage, chanting in Arabic, mean he's a bad guy, or merely a zealous convert to Islam? This show is too smart to give away too much too soon; red herrings abound, and the season ends with a cliffhanger sure to leave Homeland adherents salivating for more. Blown away by Homeland, incredibly tense and thrilling
2011 was a great year for television, with lots of established shows doing some of their best work ever. But in my view, the best thing going on TV was a new show that quickly ascended to the top of the heap, Showtime's sinister psychological thriller HOMELAND. The central storyline revolves around CIA agent Carrie Mathison, still haunted by the events of 9/11, and her belief that returning war hero Sergeant Nicholas Brody has in fact turned against his country as an al-Qaeda operative.

You know they had to be aiming high with the cast they assembled. The star is Claire Danes, making a long-awaited return to TV after a decade and a half in Hollywood. Given Danes' acting résumé, you might expect her to play a straight-laced CIA agent, but this character is anything but. I was worried about season 2 of Homeland; worried that they would not be able to re-capture the atmosphere and intensity of the first. In a way, I was a little right. I personally think the first season is quite a bit better, but being in one of the top 5 television dramas currently on television, it's easily a 5/5 stars still.

It's really hard to say too much without giving away spoilers. The best way to put it - things change...and they change A LOT. The whole dynamics of the show are different this season. A startling revelation is discovered early on and turns the show completely on its head. The formula is different, but for the most part, the outcomes are the same. It is still one of the shows best at creating tension and suspense and is a true CIA thriller.

CAST - the actors are superbly cast. Mandy Patinkin as Saul is incredible as ever this season, and even gets almost a whole episode dedicated to his acting talents...
Outstanding Follow-Up Season to an Intensely Engaging Show
The second season of the critically-acclaimed "Homeland" had a lot to live up to. The first season had a raw and frenetic intensity that was missing from television and delivered outstanding performances from it's lead cast. I know I, for one, was worried about what the second season would bring, simply because the first season was so good. I'm happy to report that my worries were unwarranted and so should anyone else's.

The thing I love about this show so much is that it keeps me guessing. Most shows on TV today follow a similar formula in which the audience can see what's going to happen long before it ever does. Any big reveals or surprises turn into moments that you wish had been presented earlier so the show could bring you something new. "Homeland" turns this idea upside down and throws it out the window. Like the season before it, this second season contains multiple big surprises and I mean QUICK. You won't have to wade through various episodes of filler for things...
Homeland Season 1 & 2

A must see program from Season One thru Season Two finish. And the reason the complete Season Two is not yet available is because the final episode just aired 12.16.2012 at 10pm on ShowTime here on Long Island. The intensity is amazing. Try to second guess the ending of each episode. The thought process that went into developing the story line is brilliant. But since the original concept was developed in Isreal, a nation that has been under constant terrorist treat since it's inception is what makes the program so real, so authentic. And to get to watch the entire Season without delay is worth the price.

Homeland grows up in season 3.

Review of content.

It's clear from reviews here and in the UK press that many have been disappointed by season 3 of Homeland, no doubt because of the conspicuous absence of Brody for several episodes. But I want to make the case for this season. To me, this was where Homeland grew up and showed real grit.

Season 1 with its simple proposition of "had-he-or-hadn't-he-been-turned?" and "is-he-or-isn't-he?" working for the other side was compelling but clearly had nowhere to go in terms of development. Season 2 lost its way completely. But season 3 rewarded the patient viewer with a brilliant twist and a multi-layered depth. It exposed a more nuanced web of relationships, the moral element of decision-making in the eternal ends-and-means dilemma and a mature understanding of the politics at play in a cruel world.

This was the season that made us realise that Homeland wasn't really about Brody at all; it was about Carrie. It was always about Carrie.

What do you do after you kill the goose that has laid the golden egg?
Like many people I loved the star crossed lover relationship between our bipolar CIA agent heroine Carrie Mathison with sloppy impulse control torn between her patriotism, and her unbridled attraction for the former marine Nicolas Brody kept captive for 8 years who might have been turned into a terrorist. By now you know what happened unless you like to put carts before horses, and season 3 begins with the aftermath of the major event of 12/12. Just when it seems like our two main characters might have a shot at a viable relationship, something always happens, like 12/12 bringing a Romeo and Juliet dimension to how the story unfolds.

Now it's all change at the CIA as Saul (played by Mandy Patinkin) takes over. Carrie starts off making yet another dubious decision and Brody has now taken on the new role of most wanted fugitive. Carrie seems to be going even more downhill in dealing with her illness, and politicking at the CIA place Saul and his protege at odds...
Excellent
"Homeland" has never been able to live up to the momentum it generated during its first season. The second season was very good, but not as exhilarating as the first. Without giving too much away, the third season was a bit disappointing for the first several episodes, leading to a shocking twist that really turned things into high-gear.

Season 3 basically deals with Brody being on the run following the CIA bombing. His family (who we don't see much of all season) is struggling during the aftermath, as is Carrie, who has a little secret she doesn't let anyone in on for a while. Ultimately, Brody is offered a chance at redemption, and the latter half of the season focuses on his quest to achieve that. The final episode of the season, while shocking to some, was also expected, and I think will lead the show into a successful fourth season. You have to ask yourself, what is this show really about? It's not about Brody. It's not even really about Carrie. It's called...

Homeland became its own show in season 4 and no longer an offshoot of that Israeli series
I didn't expect to like this season but I did. I ruefully had to admit that much as I love Damian's Lewis's acting talent, his part on this series had gone as far as it could go. What we picked up with instead is Carrie actually stationed in the Middle East as a station boss. Firsthand we experience what a mess we've got on our hands over there.

The original "Homeland" was derived from an Israeli series as its source material. That Israeli series had dealt with POWs coming back to Israel after a hostage exchange. It never moved off of its focus on the hostages and the wars in the Middle East. This show, by contrast, has completely jettisoned the Brody hostage scenario and now is solely concerned with being CIA and stuck with and in the Middle East. Quinn now has a much bigger role as part of this. So Homeland became its own show in season 4 and no longer an offshoot of that Israeli series. I like it better for that.

There are some truly startling moments...
Can't wait for the next episode!

I thought season 4 started off a little slow but by the third episode, I was hooked and can't wait for the next episode. The "in your face" occurences just blow my mind. After spending much time in the middle east and Afghanistan, I started reading up on Pakistan and the tightrope we walk to keep our access to the Kyber Pass. Amazing, relevant, thought-provoking stuff and just great TV!

Reinventing Itself On The Fly
(Warning: this review will include spoilers from earlier seasons of Homeland).

Coming into this fourth season of Homeland, my expectations really couldn't have been any lower. After a rollercoaster third season where the finale really felt like a series finale rather than a season finale, I didn't know what to expect from a show that seemed like it was starting back from square one. After a few episodes of finding its way, however, this season really kicks into high gear and proves that (though rare) a show can sometimes re-invent itself on the fly.
